Excellent review. A lot of people learning project management have difficulties in this area. I think its in part because while most people have familiarity with the business as ongoing and bigger process than the project. One the other hand, they kind of think of project teams getting together and starting something from scratch.
The system architect, business consultants, project manager, develoeprs etc. many times come to the project as a fresh endevour.
The product manager, however, arrives to make sure he gets his next version of his product. He is really a proxy for the client in a specific domain. Since clients are often around for more than one project (we can hope :-) ) the product manager has a more continous role.
What happens of course is that in many counsulting firms jobs are done in development groups with the project managers and then handed over to operations with a seperate group of operations managers and the role of product manager never really comes up.
And of course the client representative in many organizations is not organized by products and if they are in a different ways than the preforming organization.

All in all this is a key issue to understand from a project management communications point of view and this post is a great summary.

Hi John,

I think the link to the "How to be a Good Product Manager" website in your post, is wrong, the correct link is: http://www.goodproductmanager.com/

I have this article also published on PM Hut (with permission from Jeff Lash), and I agree that it's excellent.
